Hidden Talents: Olive B

It’s Friday night. Most fourth graders are relaxing after their long week at school. But not Olive. Olive is putting on her favorite yellow leotard and getting ready for gymnastics practice.

Olive first did gymnastics when she was just four years old. She began her gymnastics journey at Chows and has since moved to Sapphire. Olive told us that a typical class consists of uneven bars, parallel bars, and balance beams. She said that the balance beams are big.

Her favorite thing to do in gymnastics is the flip practice. In order to do this, you have to wear a harness. Wearing a harness allows you to be able to practice the flips all on your own. She first did flip practice when she was four. Olive said she used to be really nervous but now doing flips makes her feel happy.

Most of her classes are on Friday and Saturday for about 45 minutes. She often has competitions around Des Moines. Her favorite thing to compete in is the bars. She has gotten many awards with her favorite being the bronze medal. Olive is working hard towards earning a gold medal in bars or flips. Olive said gymnastics can start out pretty easy but gets harder as you advance through the levels. She knows this because she competes with students who are up to two grades above her.

Olive said that she thinks other Greenwood students would like gymnastics. “You have to be hardworking and very brave,” Olive said proudly. If you are curious about gymnastics, make sure to chat with Olive. She would love to pass on some tips and tricks to her friends.
