Des Moines, Iowa (May 19, 2023)—Our fourth-grade class at Greenwood Elementary collected donations of recess equipment and activities to keep Greenwood students active.
“The fourth-grade project is getting community support to increase fun and physical activity at recess,” said Mrs. Inman, Principal of Greenwood. “It will have a positive impact because students will have more activities to participate in and enjoy. It provides opportunities for teamwork and collaboration. It will also help students make new friends.” Mrs. Inman also said, “Students will be set to release energy while having fun, and then be able to refocus their brains and be ready to learn when they go back to the classroom.”
“After learning about ways that kids can be heroes, the fourth-graders brainstormed ways that they could help in the community,” said Miss Haider, fourth-grade teacher. “They chose to help their school community by advertising the benefits of physical activity in children. They wanted to do a donation drive to get new equipment and activities for recess to ensure that all students would have opportunities to actively play at recess.”
In our final literacy unit, we learned the history of the Woman’s Suffrage Movement and how people came together to create change. In our text, The Hope Chest, by Karen Schwabach, we learned of a child named Violet, who worked hard to do something meaningful as a suffragist. We too, wanted to do something meaningful. We want to thank everyone in the Greenwood community for coming together in support of our efforts to keep Greenwood students active and healthy at recess. We appreciate your donations, and they will be put to good use!
With Gratitude,
Miss Haider’s Fourth-Grade Class
